Welcoming Autumn and Fall Favorites

Diving into cozy hobbies, recipes, and books.

Living in Reverie No. 3

Welcome to the Living in Reverie Newsletter: A collection of miscellaneous daydreams, quotes, and creative recommendations. đź’«

Although the Texas weather doesn’t reflect it, we’re officially well into autumn this year! Like many people I know, autumn is my favorite time of the year. While I’m so excited for all the upcoming festivities, hobbies, and seasonal changes, those who have been impacted by Hurricane Helene or anyone who will be impacted by Hurricane Milton are top of mind this week.

I’m praying for the safety and recovery of those who cannot evacuate, anyone who will lose their homes, the healthcare workers and linemen who are staying at the frontline of things, animals who will inevitably get left behind, and the wreckage that this historic hurricane will bring. If you want to make a donation, you can check out the American Red Cross for how your donations help provide shelter, food, and comfort for families affected.

Autumn: The season to slow down
When the first few days of autumn roll around, the cooler mornings feel like a new beginning is right on the horizon. The hot, sticky summer has had it’s time of vacations, swimming, barbecues, and sun-kissed cheeks. Frankly, even before the official start of fall, by the time September 1st rolls around, I’ve had enough of sweating every time I go outside, sun burns, and getting eaten by mosquitoes. And while spring is often associated with renewals and fresh starts, doesn’t the growth really start so much further back than that first sprout? Isn’t the foundation of growth in the harvest?

🍂 Fall Favorites

Check out some of my favorite fall recipes, books I have on my to be read list, and hobbies I’m diving into over the next few months.

🍪 Baking

I make a batch of all three of these every year and pretty much swear by them:

  • Intermezzo by Sally Rooney - Sally Rooney books always give me a fall vibe. I won’t lie, I was mostly intrigued by the cover. But if I’ve learned anything from Rooney’s other books, I know I’ll probably be surprised at how caught up I get in this story about grief, love, and family.

  • The Third Gilmore Girl: A Memoir by Kelly Bishop - I was so excited to see that Kelly Bishop (who plays the incredible Emily Gilmore) wrote a memoir. I can’t wait to read her stories.

  • The Unmaking of June Farrow by Adrienne Young - Last fall, I read Spells for Forgetting by Adrienne Young and adored it. This one revolves around a woman breaking her family’s curse, solving her mother’s disappearance, and finding love. I know I won’t be disappointed.

🧩 Hobbies

As I prepare for darker and colder days, I like to make time for off-screen hobbies in the evenings to give my brain a rest. Here are some of my favorites:

  • Knitting

  • Crocheting

  • Puzzles

  • Book nooks (This is like a 3D puzzle! So, so intricate and fun)

🎥 Movies & Shows

This section would be incomplete without my favorite fall movies and TV shows:

  • Gilmore Girls (obviously)

  • Only Murders in the Building

  • The Haunting of Bly Manor

  • The Haunting of Hill House

  • Little Women (2019)

  • Dead Poets Society

  • When Harry Met Sally

  • Mona Lisa Smile

  • Fantastic Mr. Fox

  • Halloween Town (the whole series)

  • Coraline
