Musings on hope and the future

Living in Reverie No. 4

Welcome to the Living in Reverie Newsletter: A collection of miscellaneous daydreams, quotes, and creative recommendations.

Hello friends! How is everyone doing? I hope you all are taking care of yourselves as the year winds down and we head into an unquestionably strange time. I took some time to address recent events in this week’s blog post that I hope everyone has a chance to read regardless of how you feel about politics. Remember that politics affect policies which affect people, and it is inherently human to care about things that affect people.

Outside of that, we’re now in the literal darkest days of the year (I internally cry when the sun sets at 5:30 p.m.). I’m doing my best to take care of myself by getting plenty of sleep, getting outside when the sun is out, and hunkering in with cozy hobbies in the evening. You can also check out my last blog — Autumn: The season to slow down — for more insights on this season if you missed it last time. 🍂

🗣 Notes on Silence
I believe having the freedom to voice your opinion about your country and government is a privilege that most of us take for granted. I also believe not voicing your opinion in times like this is a privilege. This week’s post is a clear mark of a shift in content on my blog moving forward. Mixed in with my usual topics of reading, essays, and poetry, I want to do my best to create a platform that shares knowledge and facts as well. Even though I am just one writer, I believe writing and capturing these times is essential to promoting social justice.

☁️ On my mind

Because whatever has happened to humanity, whatever is currently happening to humanity, it is happening to all of us. No matter how hidden the cruelty, no matter how far off the screams of pain and terror, we live in one world.”

Alice Walker

This week I’m thinking about a lot of things. I’m thinking about the beautiful immigrants who make up America’s very fabric and how scared they must be feeling. I’m thinking about women — all of those who have been working so hard lately, all the women who have come before us, and all the women who will continue to lead when we are gone. I’m thinking about how medicine lets women down, and how our own healthcare often does not even put us at its center. I’m thinking about community and how online worlds have given so many of us a false sense of the word, and how many people do not know their neighbors or people they see day in and out. I’m thinking about the LGBTQ community and how love is love now and always.

I’m also thinking about what it means to love my neighbor. I’m thinking about my wonderful, intelligent, hilarious friends and family who keep me going when the world is so grey. I’m thinking about treating strangers with kindness. I’m thinking about I’m thinking about how grateful I am for a safe space with a safe partner. I’m thinking about my privileges that so many in this world do not have, and I am relishing in small moments of joy. I’m thinking about how life goes on and the world keeps turning no matter what happens. I’m thinking about how stars keep shining no matter the amount of darkness around them.
